LEADERS MUST BE ROLEMODELS FOR CHANGE

Most of us have an instinctive resistance towards change. Therefore, leaders must be the change they want to see in their employees. They have to risk something personal to make their employees want to change. I experienced an inspiring female leader, who placed herself in the middle of the room and let her fellow leaders discuss openly the things she could to better. The result: a change from competition to cooperation in the leader group. Her story inspired me to write this feature, published by Børsen Executive.

WINNER OF FLSMIDTH STRATEGY AWARD 2012

I had the pleasure of receiving the FLSmidth Strategy Award 2012 for the virtual leadership education, which I’ve developed for FLSmidth’s travelling engineers. The employees and the top management have elected our project to be the winner in the category Seek Excellence amongst 200 projects.

The virtual leadership education has a goal of educating travelling engineers, while they’re situated on cement sides all over the world. Therefore, the half-year management training is tailored to fit travellers’ everyday lives and takes place in a virtual classroom. The programme provides participants with 10 ECTS points and makes it possible to develop leadership skills, even as a part of Nigeria or Kuwait. According to the managers’ employees the training has improved leadership and teamwork in the company’s global cement sites significantly. 47% more employees think that the site management is good or very good, compared to results in 2011. Virtual training with ECTS points is the way towards self-management in global teams.

“Today I felt that we started talking about REAL challenges. I have previously participated in a fair share of courses, and they’re always static with a a lot of theory. This course is custom made and based on real life situations from our everyday life, that’s where a real learning begins.”

Sajeev, site manager
